Experience fishing the way it used to be! Located 50 miles west of mainland British Columbia and just south of the Alaska panhandle, the islands of Haida Gwaii formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands sit on the edge of the continental shelf. It is here that huge schools of migrating salmon make landfall after years spent roaming the North Pacific. Upwelling currents and cold deep water provide baitfish and a perfect feeding ground for Chinook and Coho salmon. These fish are in prime condition and are known for their aggressive behavior and epic battles. There is no other destination in the Pacific Northwest that compares to the volume and variety of migrating salmon runs than the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. The good fortune of being the closest land mass to the continental shelf also provides incredible fishing for Halibut, Lingcod and Rockfish. Considered the most consistent fishing for Chinook salmon and one of the best angling experiences anywhere.
Avid Sportfishing's guides are some of the most experienced, knowledgeable and fanatical salmon fishermen on the west coast. Head Guide and owner Neil Goodwin has been guiding BC's north coast and Haida Gwaii since 1995. Neil and his roster of local guides will put you on the fish and make sure you have loads of fun out on the water. Weather you're an avid angler or a novice fishermen Avid`s guides provide a west coast fishing experience that is second to none. Haida Gwaii's best guides with the best equipment in the best place in the world to catch salmon and halibut, it's safe to say you're in good company with Avid Sportfishing's guides. All of our guides are experienced and competent boat captains that possess Transport Canada Certification as Small Commercial Vessel Operators. Our guides are also trained in vessel navigation and safety procedures according to the Canadian Shipping Act.
We experience exceptional Chinook (King) salmon fishing throughout our entire season. When is the best time to come? Being that we are a major feeding ground for all runs this a tough question to answer. At literally anytime during our 4 month season you can experience salmon fishing that you never thought possible.
It doesn't get any more extreme than the exposed western shore of Haida Gwaii. Luckily the waters of Cartwright Sound have places to seek refuge from the heaving North Pacific. These also happen to be some of our best salmon fishing spots. There is always a leeward side of an island or headland that offers productive salmon fishing in calm water.
When it comes to variety of species the West Coast of Haida Gwaii is hard to beat! This area is renowned for its impressive runs of Chinook salmon but the Halibut, Lingcod and Snapper fishing opportunities are also world class. This is considered BC's most consistent fishing for all species and the last frontier for fishing in the Pacific Northwest.
This remote region of the BC coast has some of the richest feeding grounds for all five species of salmon and halibut. It also attracts large numbers of marine mammals and birds that come to feed on massive schools of herring and krill. Matched with ancient temperate rainforests, rugged mountain backdrops and lack of human presence the western shores of Haida Gwaii provide a true wilderness fishing experience.

At Avid Sportfishing we understand that using quality equipment is important to providing a quality fishing experience. There is nothing worse than finding out the boat you are spending the next few days on is inadequate and uncomfortable. We feel that our 30 foot Kingfishers are the ultimate guide boats and our guests completely agree. These boats are designed to handle the west coast conditions and are a stable and safe fishing platform even in big seas. The spacious cabin and fishing deck are perfect for up to four guests + guide with room to spare. The heated cabin and full sized onboard washroom are nice features and make the long days on the water much more enjoyable. Other features include top of the line electronics, a satellite radio and a bed in the bow for that optional mid afternoon nap. Floater jackets, rain gear and boots are also provided to keep you warm and dry on those rainy west coast days.
At Avid we use only top of the line rods, reels and tackle. Islander reels mounted on GLoomis rods for salmon and Shimano Trevala rods with Avet HX reels for Halibut.
