Overview

Sandy Point Wilderness Lodge provides guests with exceptional comfort, excellent food, excellent food and great service in a remote location where guests can escape, time slows down and nature presents the best it has to offer. It’s located on Gordon Lake, which is situated northeast of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories on the rocky and rugged Canadian Shield. Gordon Lake is one of the lakes on the winter ice road to the diamond mines. We are only accessible by float plane in the summer.

Our packages include picking you up at the Yellowknife airport and transporting you to the float plane docks of Great Slave Lake; from there we take off in a Cessna Caravan or Twin Otter, depending on the size of your group.

We land on Gordon Lake after a scenic half hour flight. With the long sunny days of summer you can get settled in your cabin, then head out on the 50 km long lake right away. When you return we will feed you a delicious meal and you can really begin to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

For the duration of your stay, it will be just the lodge guests on the entire lake to explore, fish, eat and relax. You will truly enjoy our little corner in the boreal wilderness.

Gordon Lake has a very healthy fishery; the lake is 50km long (30 miles) and has over 800 islands, so there is lots of productive fish habitat. Sandy Point Lodge is the only lodge on the lake so our guests have the entire lake to explore and find their favourite fishing holes.

The Lake’s record for Lake Trout is a 56.5 lb whopper caught in June 2008 by Peter Cleveland of Ottawa.

The Lake trout (salvelinus namaycush) is the main fish in Gordon Lake, and since the water stays cool, the fish stay shallow for the entire month of June and first two weeks of July. We are often sold out for the month of June well in advance.

As the water temperature warms up and the trout settle into the deeper holes, our experienced guides will show you where to go. Experience and patience pay off when fishing in deeper water where the big fish gather in late July and August.

The lake’s record pike is 30 lbs. Northern pike (Esox lucius) can be found in the shallow bays, or along the shore hiding in the weeds. Many of our guests enjoy a break from the hunt for Lake Trout to cast a lure for Pike. The cold water early in the season keeps the Pike on the move. Once the waters are warm on the surface in mid and late summer, the Pike settle in the bays.

Hiking, sightseeing, golfing on our 6 hole boreal “golf course”, viewing historical mining artifacts, picking berries, relaxing, socializing, viewing wildlife, playing horseshoes, swimming (not recommended in June) sitting around a fire or enjoying the hot tub.

If you want to do something other than catch a lot of fish, you can spend time hiking and exploring one of the abandoned gold mine sites in the area dating from the 1930’s and 40’s.

If you have binoculars and a camera you may spot local wildlife. Guests have viewed wolves, moose, black bear, grizzly, bald eagles, golden eagles, otters, and lots of ducks and loons.

Sandy Point Lodge is a great place for the whole family, young and old. Whatever you choose to do during your stay you will be impressed by the peace and quiet of the genuine northern wilderness that is Gordon Lake.

BOATS

Description

16 ft. Crestliner welded aluminum boats with 25 horsepower motors, radios and fish finders. Guests can keep in touch with other boats and with the lodge over the radio system. All of the boats have radios and are well equipped.

We use Cisco for bait on large herring teasers. The most common fishing rod used is a medium action 6′ or 7′ rod with 20-30 lb test. Medium to large spoons are popular (Daredevils and Len Thompsons). We provide fishing rods, bait and lures for your use. We also provide life jackets and rain gear for each guest.
