Overview

At Zachar Bay Lodge our guests enjoy the remote wilderness of Alaska’s Kodiak Island while relaxing in accommodations that are both welcoming and comfortable. Our lodge offers a variety of different options for daily excursions ranging from sport fishing trips on both fresh and saltwater, to other outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, sea kayaking, and hiking. We would love nothing more than to show you a Bear, help you catch a Halibut, and share with you for a short while the pleasure that is life on the Kodiak Island.

We PRIDE ourselves on providing excellent service. Our daily fishing or wildlife viewing adventures are designed to be fun, educational, safety-oriented, and to leave-no-trace on the environment. Our guests return year after year to Zachar Bay Lodge. Why?

The answers range from the spectacular fresh and saltwater fishing adventures to the delicious food, comfortable accommodations, diversity of wildlife and, of course, the playful Kodiak Brown Bears! You can enjoy the VARIETY that Zachar Bay has to offer. Whether you enjoy fishing lakes, rivers or the ocean, we have a package that is right for you. The lodge is located in the heart of the Kodiak Island National Wildlife Refuge, 50 miles southwest of Kodiak City, only accessible by floatplane. Advance reservations are required.

Zachar Bay Lodge offers freshwater and saltwater fishing trips to excite anglers of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re a veteran deep-sea angler, a seasoned fly-fishing purist, or a total novice, the lodge has plenty to offer you.

Boat skippers have decades of experience between them. They know the best locations and the best techniques for catching monster halibut. At Zachar Bay you’ll have the special privilege of fishing in calm, shallow waters not far from the lodge. That means more fishing time and less seasickness. It also means you can fight those monster fish on much lighter tackle. In the same waters you can also troll for bright, acrobatic silver salmon, as well as trophy king salmon.

Zachar Bay Lodge also offers fly-out fishing trips to remote, secluded lakes and streams where huge schools of sockeye salmon and arctic char await. This is an unforgettable, real Alaskan experience for both fly-fishermen and spin-fishermen. You can also join a hike up a pristine river where you can catch silver, chum, and pink salmon until your arms ache (this actually happens a lot). You can even have fresh fish grilled over an open fire, prepared by your guide.

You won’t be disappointed with the fishing here. But fishing is only the start! There are many other activities to enjoy. In fact, the possibilities are endless.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Description

Zachar Bay Lodge was originally established as a wilderness lodge in 1989, and since that time, the Eaton’s continue to improve the facility. The ‘Cannery’ was originally constucted in the early 1920’s as a fish processing plant, and many crew quarters were constructed to accomodate the 100+ workers during the short summer season.

Many of the original cannery buildings still exist, but most of the surrounding buildings that make up our guest quarters have been newly constructed or renovated, The rooms and buildlings are clean and comfortable and retain the quaint cannery atmosphere. All are modernized with indoor plumbing, heat and electricity. We can accommodate up to 22 guests in 11 private guest rooms, each cozily furnished with two single beds, dresser, nightstand, mirror, closet, posters, rugs and heaters, private or shared bathrooms and hot showers. We provide pillows, sheets, blankets, towels and soap, and rooms are cleaned daily.

There are two guest rooms that share a bathroom located on the end of the building. The central location makes these rooms ideal for those guests who would like to be close, or if personal mobility is limited.

The Guest Houses

Bay House
The Bay House was remodeled as summer guest accommodations upon the Eaton’s purchase of Zachar Bay. The building was originally a 4-plex, built in the 1960’s to house 16 cannery workers. The rennovations included removing two large walls, constructing two covered porches, adding two large windows, heat, and bathrooms. There are 2 private guest rooms with outdoor entrances, each featuring a private bathrooms with showers. The building is located on the hill, with a view of Zachar Bay out the front windows and off the community deck.

Animal House
The Animal House is one of the original cannery bunkhouses. It has been remodeled as summer guest accommodations upon the Eaton’s purchase of Zachar Bay. The building was originally a 5-plex with one large community bathroom, built to house 20 cannery workers. The rennovations included new electrical wiring, new interior, adding a central propane heater, and two new bathrooms.

There are 4 guest rooms with that have a common living room entrance. There are two bathrooms in the building, each with a shower. The building is centrally located among the other buildings just above beach level, with a view of Zachar Bay out the front. We tend to use the Animal House for families or larger groups.

Pisces House
The Pisces House was constructed by the Eaton’s as summer guest accommodations. There are 3 private guest rooms with outdoor entrances, each featuring a private bathrooms with showers. The building is located on the hill, with a view of Zachar Bay out the front windows and off the community deck.

Amenities

Guests are fed family-style in the spacious dining hall. Our chef, serves sumptuous (and lots of it!) buffet meals of fresh halibut, salmon and delicious homemade bread, pies and desserts.

Originally built in the 1960’s, the Dining Hall was designed to feed over 60 people at one sitting. The large dining tables and benches remain, retaining some of the original cannery atmosphere. The large commercial kitchen has been modernized for our talented chef to prepare the tasty meals.

The Dining Hall is designed to be the main gathering area at Zachar Bay Lodge. The large, open layout provides plenty of space during mealtime, telling the days fishing stories before or after dinner, or just relaxing and watching the tide roll in. A large deck off the front of the building offers beach front views of Zachar Bay – and sometimes fishing opportunities at high tide! There is a gaming area that has a pool table and also a sitting area with satellite television. A community computer can be provided if you would like to check your email on our wireless internet. Cell phones DO NOT work at Zachar Bay, but… new in 2012 was ‘decent’ landline telephone connection via a cell phone service provided in the neighboring village.

Meals

Meals are served buffet style in our large dining hall, at the respective times listed below. Our chef chooses the menu for the day.

Special dietary requests can be accommodated. Please advise us when making reservations if you have special food requests.

Our nearest market only offers ‘fresh seafood’.

Other Activities

Explore the diverse ecosystem within the boundaries of Zachar Bay on Kodiak Island during our guided wildlife viewing adventures. Zachar Bay is located within the confines of the 1.9 millon acres of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which was created August 19, 1941 “for the purpose of protecting the natural feeding and breeding range of the brown bears and other wildlife on Kodiak Island, Alaska.”

Kodiak’s scenery is magnificient—rugged mountains, hundreds of miles of shoreline, lakes, marshes, bogs, and meadows. Four-thousand-foot mountains rise from the sea accented with fjordlike inlets. Lush vegetation blankets the mountains ranging from sedges, alders, and spruce to colorful wildflowers and berries. The refuge is home to an estimated 2,300 brown bears, and at least 600 nesting pairs of bald eagles. More than 250 species of birds live upon or visit the refuge, while more than 1.5 million seabirds overwinter in nearshore waters surrounding Kodiak Island.

Full day guided trips from the lodge offer you the opportunity to view and experience wildlife in its natural environment with a minimum disturbance to the animals and their habitat. New and varied adventures occur on every trip. You will see a variety of marine and land animals in their natural surroundings. We suggest a four day stay to be able to view all the wildlife that we have to offer.

Bear Viewing

Zachar Bay Lodge offers fantastic opportunities to experience Kodiak Island’s world-famous brown bears in their pristine and natural habitat. The lodge itself is located in the heart of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, home of the Kodiak brown bear.

For a very special bear viewing experience, and virtually guaranteed bear sightings, you can fly out for a full day of bear viewing at Frazer Falls, one of the world’s best places to see high concentrations of wild brown bears fishing for salmon. Here there is nothing between you and the bears save for the long-held tradition of mutual respect that exists only at this particular spot. The opportunities for bear photography in this picturesque setting are superb. And perhaps best of all, you will likely have this little known place all to yourself for most or all of the day. You will, of course, be accompanied by your very own professional bear-viewing guide the whole time. Such a situation is unique in the world, and Zachar Bay is honored to share it with you.

In addition to seeing bears on special bear viewing trips, you are very likely to see bears while fishing, while flying around in a bush plane, and indeed during any of the wilderness activities. With all the bears you’re likely to see during your guided day trips, you’ll probably be happy to know that bears are hardly ever found nosing around the lodge.

Nature Activities

Zachar Bay Lodge offers nature lovers, wildlife viewers, and photographers every opportunity to enjoy all the boundless beauty and varied wildlife Kodiak Island has to offer.

On marine mammal boat tours, you can see adorable otters, seals, sea lions, porpoises, and whales. Bird enthusiasts will see a variety of interesting birds, including two kinds of puffins. In addition to the mighty brown bear, there are several other land mammals on the island, including blacktail deer, mountain goats, and foxes. They can often be seen on a kayak trip or on a lovely hike up the beautiful Zachar River.
