Overview

Talaheim Lodge established over 40 years ago is the only fishing lodge in Alaska with two helicopters which enable them to take their fly fishermen to very remote rivers and streams not accessible to fixed wing aircraft or boats.  You and your friend will share a stretch of water to yourselves each day.  Talaheim takes a maximum of six guests per week.  Your price of $8600 per person includes:  Round trip airfare from Anchorage to Talaheim Lodge, six nights lodging – seven days fishing, six days’ helicopter fly outs – one-day traveling by river boat fishing local waters, great foods, wines and draft beer served in the evenings, guides, use of lodge rods ($50 charge for broken rods) and waders (rent for $50 per week). You may call out using your smart phone…Wi-Fi calling.

What makes us unique:

  1. We’re the only lodge in Alaska that owns two helicopters for our guest’s exclusive use. Located 80 miles west of Anchorage, surrounded by nothing but a valley of mountains, we fish streams rarely seen by other anglers.
  2. Whether you’re an avid fly fisherman looking to hook one of our famous Rainbow Trout, or a novice angler after an Alaskan King, Sockeye, or Silver salmon, see why Talaheim Fishing Lodge has been the anglers choice for over forty years.
  3. With only six to eight fishermen per week, our guests enjoy personal service from a staff of experts. From fishing guides, helicopters pilots, to chefs, we’ve been blessed that our staff continues to return, year after year, just like our salmon.
  4. Cozy and rustic in style, all of our guest cabins are equipped with electricity, refrigeration, indoor plumbing, wood stove or central heating, while meals feature gourmet cuisine including many Alaskan favorites.
  5. We’ve been a family run business for over forty years, and that family feeling extends to our guests. Over half of our clients return, many of which come several times across decades and bring with them a new generation of fishermen.
  6. With over forty years in business, Talaheim Lodge is known throughout the world as a premiere fly fishing destination, and lodge founder and owner, Mark Miller, an Alaskan pioneer, expert bush pilot, and teller of many incredible stories.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Description

Talaheim’s Alaskan luxury fishing lodge features four separate log cabins for our guests’ exclusive use. Cozy and rustic in style, each cabin was built using local logs and timbers that were then cut to lumber using our on-site sawmill. The family cabin is the biggest and can accommodate up to six adults, the other three cabins can sleep two to three adults.

Each guest cabin is equipped with refrigeration stocked daily with great Alaskan beer, soda, juice and water. Our cabins have wood or oil heaters, full bathrooms, and 24-hour electricity.

Each cabin has its own unique view of the Beluga Mountains and after a day of fishing there’s nothing more relaxing than retreating to your personal cabin to curl up in front of the fire, or sit on the porch and enjoy a cool beverage.

We occupy 10 acres of wilderness, which we’ve mostly tamed. Or in the least, put down boardwalks and gravel paths.

Amenities

Talaheim means “Home on the Tal” and it is our goal to make you feel just that: at home.

We offer the following amenities to enhance your stay. If you don’t see something here, please reach out.

Hot Tub: Bring your bathing suit! There’s nothing like a good soak after a long day of fishing. Please note, this is a fire-warmed hot tub. If you’d like to partake, please let the staff know before leaving for the day so we can have it ready upon your return.

Fire Pit: Sit around the fire and swap your favorite fishing stories while sipping Alaskan Ale served in a frosted mug.

Phone: WiFi calling from your smart phone is available at the Main Lodge.

Internet: We offer complementary WiFi at the Main Lodge. Our signal works great when needing to check emails. It is not strong enough to stream movies.

Waders: We rent Aquaz waders in a wide variety of sizes for $50 a week. Please let the host know upon booking if you plan to partake.

Rods, Reels & Flies: We offer a wide variety of fishing supplies. Check out our “What to Bring” page for more specifics.

Exercise: If you’re looking for more exercise while at Talaheim we encourage you to run or walk our runway. The strip is over 1/4 mile in length.

Dogs: Yes, we consider our dogs amenities because they’ll follow you around like a tour guide, often with a ball in their mouth.

Meals

You won’t go hungry at Talaheim because our meals are just as superb as the fishing. Our chef prepares gourmet cuisine daily, featuring many Alaskan favorites and fresh vegetables from our garden.

Breakfasts range from homemade granola and fresh fruit, to eggs Benedict, to cinnamon french toast with spiced applesauce and a side of reindeer sausage.

Lunches are prepared by our chef but meant to eat shore-side. They range from sandwich spreads served on fresh bread, to a variety of salads, salamis and cheeses, followed by homemade cookies. Guides are also known to grill up fresh fish, either a grayling or salmon, upon request.

Appetizers are served once guests return from fishing. Baked brie, smoked salmon dip, and jalapeno poppers are some of our favorites.

Dinners are an experience unto themselves. Crab stuffed flank steak, pepper crusted Alaskan salmon, halibut baked with a rub of garlic, ginger and turmeric. But make sure you leave room for dessert because you won’t want to miss our homemade apple pie and ice cream, Kahlua chocolate cake, or our cream brulee.

As for drinks, we provide Alaskan ale from the tap served in chilled mugs, and a variety of white and red wine. If you’re interested in cocktails, be sure to let us know upon booking.

Breakfasts and dinners are served family style at the main lodge, whereas lunches are served by our guides and enjoyed shore-side.

We can accommodate every dietary restriction with prior notice. Please let us know upon booking so we can adequately prepare for your arrival.

Other Activities

Although fly-fishing has always been at the heart of our activities, we offer a wide array of Alaska wilderness adventures perfectly suited to break up the fishing week, or offer a family member or spouse an alternative to fishing.

Heli-Hiking: In search of a great view and some exercise? Our helicopters can drop you off on the top of the Beluga Mountains, a perfect destination for a day hike.

Day Floats: Take a day to float down the Talachulitna River, or a surrounding river, by raft or portable canoe. Float trips are a very peaceful way to explore the environment and safely sneak up on furry members of Mother Nature. At anytime during the day, pull over to try a great fishing hole, or a swimming hole, or to enjoy a campfire lunch.

Panning for Gold: There’s gold in our mountain ranges! In fact, we get requests for helicopter charters from the local gold mine in our area. Sadly they do not share any trade secrets. We have all the gear if you’re interested in testing your luck.

Visiting Trapper Jim: Midway on the Tal’s first resident lives two bends downriver from Talaheim and is an expert wood craftsman. He carves bowls and vases out of burls which make excellent souvenirs.

Wildlife Adventures: For an additional cost we can fly 150 miles south to visit one of Alaska’s National Parks and famous bear viewing destinations. Or fly 80 miles east through the Alaska Range where sheep and caribou can be seen from the air before picnicking at an abandoned mining camp.

If you’re flying into Anchorage a few days prior to your trip to Talaheim, or plan to spend time in town after your fishing trip, then Captain Cook Hotel offers five star accommodations right in the heart of downtown. Walkable to museums, fine dining, shopping, as well as Anchorage’s scenic Coastal Trail, experience why this hotel remains a historic icon of our city.

    * Please note, Captain Cook does not offer shuttle service to or from Lake Hood airport. Typical taxi fare runs approximately $20 each way.

If you’re flying into Anchorage and leaving for Talaheim the next morning, then a hotel close to Lake Hood Airport may be a better fit. In this case, we suggest The Lakefront Anchorage Hotel located on the lake that houses the largest seaplane base airport in the world. This hotel offers lake front dining and shuttle service to and from Talaheim’s pick up point.

Another hotel that is easily assessable to the airport is Anchorage’s Courtyard Marriott. Only two miles from Anchorage International, this Marriott offers several walkable dining options as well as shuttles to and from Talaheim’s pick up point.

Guests typically meet at Sportsman Air Service, or in another Lake Hood location, around 6:30AM on Sunday in preparation for their 7:00AM departure.

If there’s a delay due to weather, it typically doesn’t last too long. Should this occur, guests are encouraged to walk around Lake Hood or hang out in the waiting room at Sportsman Air.

If there’s a more significant weather delay, we typically know prior to your scheduled arrival at Lake Hood and can alert you, either on Saturday or early Sunday morning.
